PORTLAND, ME, 08/30/2019 – This coming weekend on September 6th and 7th, The Fresnel Theater, Portland Maine’s only dedicated improv comedy theater, is bringing 26.2 hours of non-stop comedy to the public. The Improvathon, part of the theater’s annual fundraiser, runs around the clock and features improvisers from Improv Acadia, Running with Scissors, Stranger than Fiction, and more.
The theater is fundraising for the $24,000 needed to remodel their restrooms and acquire a beer and wine license, which will allow them to hold even more special comedy events. The 26.2 hours will start at 8pm on Friday, September 6th, with the theater’s signature show, ComedySportz. Performers from that evening will stay up until the ComedySportz match on Saturday at 8pm, where they will form a “sleep-deprived team” that will battle against the “well-rested team,” for audience applause. “Yes, it’s a little crazy to stay up that long,” says Creative Director Matt Russell. “It’s definitely a feat of endurance, but it promises to be fun.”
The theater will also be holding matinees of their ComedySportz show on Saturday at 12pm and 4pm during the improvathon so that families can come see the comedy show that is for everyone without worrying about bedtime. Throughout the early hours on Saturday (12am-6am), you can see some experimental improv as performers stretch creative muscles and prop open tired eyes.
Those interested in donating or sponsoring the event should visit the theater’s website at https://www.thefresneltheater.org/improvathon-2019/ or email [email protected]. The Fresnel Theater is located downtown, at 17 Free St. in Portland, Maine.
